Position Overview
This position will fill a key role within MIT.nano, a large shared services facility at MIT, by performing a variety of tasks to enhance the users’ experience at MIT.nano including user trainings and qualifications on variety of fabrication and metrology equipment, maintaining MIT.nano’s lab management system (NEMO); designing and implementing new LMS functionalities; overseeing the hardware and software interfaces for the wide range of facility equipment and providing technical and instructional support for facility staff and users.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**)

Lab & Tools

  • Help develop training materials and supporting the user base on Fab and Metrology instrumentation.
  • Interfacing with equipment, tool, and instrumentation suppliers which will demand a thorough knowledge of the technical details associated with such systems.
  • Run process qualifications (independently or in collaboration with others), at meaningful intervals, to be able to track and document tool performance over time to users. This may involve simple steps (e.g. deposition rate and uniformity) or more involved processes (e.g. lithography dose matrices, etch profiles, MOS capacitors to quantify ALD quality).
  • Develop recipes, programs, and processes (workflows). Be familiar with computer-aided fabrication and manufacturing systems. Sustain the appropriate level of proficiency.

NEMO Lab Management System (LMS)

  • Oversees the full NEMO LMS global role functionality
  • Serves as a single point of contact for global configuration, modifications, troubleshooting and quality assurance of NEMO LMS functionalities and overseeing implementation of new LMS functionalities integration; Responsible for keeping up to date on new versions and feature releases and informs the staff and users of the new capabilities.
  • Assists staff and facility users with NEMO related inquiries as needed, this includes access related issues, access badge generation for LMS badge controlled equipment/environments.
  • Responsible for implementation of system hardware and software interlocks and educating staff/users on interlocking functionalities.
  • Responsible for development and updating of LMS technical documentation (SOP's/Manuals) in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for accuracy of documentation records in LMS (Safety (SDS) and Equipment SOP's/Instrumentation location visual details/staff contacts/ etc.).
  • In coordination with infrastructure team responsible for timely LMS updates on Resources maintenance/outages.
  • Serve as a single point of contact for integration of the ticketing system and the relational user databases with LMS.
  • Maintains contact with peer institutions and consultancy contacts on collaborative LMS platform development efforts.

Knowledge Creation and Transfer

  • Identify and develop fabrication insights, and document them in an effort to create and preserve institutional knowledge.
  • Maintain clear and concise SOPs for broad range of fabrication and metrology instrumentation.
  • Maintain effective training protocols and documentation to enhance the user communities’ access to tools and instruments. 

User Interactions

  • Maintain a presence in the facility to be available to assist users with their day-to-day processing challenges and devise and assist users with process challenges, particularly when it also creates new capabilities or brings in new users.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Masters in an engineering or science discipline related to microfabrication. At least four years of research experience as a Postdoc in an academic setting or research facility. Excellent research and publication record.  Proven ability to independently design, execute, and optimize a broad range of fabrication processes. Practical and theoretical familiarity with all/many process categories (e.g. lithography, ICP etching, PECVD deposition, diffusion, etc).   Expertise in data management and processing, and associated programming experience (e.g. python, Matlab, etc).
Experience with API development and any server side programming languages such as Python or Java. Adept at troubleshooting, with a keen eye for details; Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills; A self-starter with the ability to thrive both independently and as an integral member of a dynamic team. Familiarity with network protocols and data storage management.
Must be methodical, detail-oriented, and a critical thinker that is willing to learn and perform a wide range of tasks. Enthusiasm for educating students about processing, fabrication solutions and approaches.  Must have excellent interpersonal, planning, organizational, presentation, analytical, and written and oral communication skills; attention to detail, accuracy, quality, and time sensitivity; interest in delving into complex problems.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
PhD in an engineering or science discipline related to microfabrication.
