ABSTRACT

Augmented textilesWhat if textiles could respond to body gestures? Goldstein’s research explores the hybrid workflow between digital and physical body movement through programmable interactive textiles. Her research investigates how we interact and form relationships with physical materials in a digital space, and suggests new ways that smart textiles can facilitate interactions between the physical world and virtual simulations through body motion.

Using 3D technologies, Goldstein is working on developing digital and tangible fabric systems that can communicate hybrid workflow of adding new dimensions to material systems through the concept of augmented textiles.

About Ganit goldstein

Ganit Goldstein is a textile researcher and 3D fashion designer. She is a student in the MIT Master of Science in Architecture Studies in Computation program and a research assistant at MIT's Self-Assembly Lab. She is a fellow of the Morningside Academy of Design, a new hub for enhancing design concepts across MIT. Goldstein graduated with distinction with a B.A. in fashion design from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, and completed her master’s degree in soft systems textiles at the Royal College of Art in London.

Goldstein believes in an interdisciplinary approach to design, mixing tradition and futuristic techniques to emphasize the relationship between craft, technology, science, and arts through pioneering research and international partnerships. Her work can be seen at ganitgoldstein.com.

about immersed

IMMERSED is a monthly seminar in which we explore the possibilities enabled by immersive technology and interactive experiences. Technologies such as motion capture, virtual and augmented reality, photogrammetry, and related computational advances bestow the power to gather, process, and interact with data from multiple modalities, providing unique insights and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations.

IMMERSED examines how immersive technology is shaping innovations across the sciences and the arts through a mix of lectures, demonstrations, and tutorials. IMMERSED is sponsored by the MIT.nano Immersion Lab, which provides space, tools, and a platform to connect scientists, engineers, artists, performers, and others through creative projects that bridge multiple disciplines.
