MIT.nano receives one-petabyte data storage platform

Western Digital Peak Award will support MIT.nano’s characterization facility.

MIT.nano has been awarded the Petabyte Innovation Quest, or Peak Award, by Western Digital.

“What can you do with one petabyte of storage space?” asked Western Digital’s call for submissions for the Peak Award. A quest in data storage for innovation, Western Digital sought to provide HDD storage to the most innovative and fitting idea.

The Ultrastar Data60 Hybrid Storage Platform is now available at MIT.nano, supporting users with managing of images from the data-intensive microscopes. The physical storage device, installed in the basement of MIT.nano, uses Western Digital IsoVibe vibration isolation technology and ArcticFlow thermal zone cooling technology. The software-defined storage system provides up to 1.68 petabytes—over 1,000 terabytes—of raw storage, ready to handle images of the many upcoming discoveries.
