Notes on how to obtain access to campus

Access is initiated through your PI

In the first phase of research ramp up, MIT PIs are allowed an on-campus research activity up to 25% of their full research capacity. Once your name has been submitted by your PI for access, you should receive an email with links to complete the campus access steps. Timing on when you receive this message may be gated by when your PI’s lab access plan is approved. Learn about the COVID Access System for researchers.

Starting on June 15th at 8 AM, individuals who have completed their requirements for returning to campus and who have a valid COVID Pass will be able to access the buildings that were designated by their PI/Supervisor.

Helpful information on the process

The MIT Vice President for Research (VPR) has posted a collection of emails and other notices to help you understand how to obtain access back on campus to your PI’s lab as well as core facilities like MIT.nano. In addition, the central COVID-19 page has information about returning to work on campus.

Getting into MIT.nano and other MIT buildings

Once you have clearance to return to campus, you will be able to get into MIT.nano.

Buildings will only be accessible through specific access points that have card readers activated by the COVID Access System or staffed with a check-in desk. See the map of campus entry points.

Based on the VPR map:

  • Enter Building 12 through the West Lobby checkpoint, next to the breezeway and Building 13.
  • Enter Building 39 through the checkpoints in Building 34 or Building 32. You won’t be able to enter Building 39 on the ground floor.
  • Enter Building 24 as normal through the west door facing the courtyard.

MIT internal hallways will be open and you can use them as well to get around between areas you’re approved for, e.g. to take the indoor route between 12 and 39.

Daily health attestation

As per the VPR, each researcher and staff member must complete a daily health attestation each day you plan to come to campus in order to access buildings through the checkpoints. The pass expires after 25 hours.

It is advised that staff do this before leaving home. Fill out the daily health attestation on the COVID Pass page every day before you come to campus.

Once you are on campus, refer to the EHS Policy Statement: Gloves, Face Coverings, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for how to protect yourself and others.
