ABSTRACT

MIT.nanoAR is a project that aims to enhance operations and maintenance of engineering infrastructure by integrating augmented reality (AR) technology into the process. The project focuses on providing engineers and operators with immersive visualizations of piping systems, safety critical equipment, and other internal infrastructure elements within real-world built environments. By overlaying virtual models of these systems onto physical spaces, AR enables users to visualize structural details embedded within walls and ceilings, enhancing the ability to identify potential issues or areas for improvement.

This technology-driven approach is also designed to streamline the inspection process, reducing the time and effort required for detailed assessments, while significantly improving accuracy. The immersive nature of AR allows for a more intuitive understanding of internal structures, aiding in more informed decision-making and better infrastructure management. Key benefits include increased efficiency, reduced rework, and improved situational awareness. By bridging the gap between the physical and virtual worlds, this project demonstrates the potential of AR to transform how day-to-day inspections are conducted, paving the way for smarter, faster, and reliable evaluations of industrial facilities.

about immersed

IMMERSED is a seminar in which we explore the possibilities enabled by immersive technology and interactive experiences. Technologies such as motion capture, virtual and augmented reality, photogrammetry, and related computational advances bestow the power to gather, process, and interact with data from multiple modalities, providing unique insights and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations.

IMMERSED examines how immersive technology is shaping innovations across the sciences and the arts through a mix of lectures, demonstrations, and tutorials. IMMERSED is sponsored by the MIT.nano Immersion Lab, which provides space, tools, and a platform to connect scientists, engineers, artists, performers, and others through creative projects that bridge multiple disciplines.
