Turning diamond into metal

Normally an insulator, diamond becomes a metallic conductor when subjected to large strain in a new theoretical model.

Engineers produce a fisheye lens that’s completely flat

The new design could potentially be adapted for a range of applications, with thin, ultra-wide-angle lenses built directly into smartphones and laptops, rather than physically attached as bulky add-ons. The low-profile lenses might also be integrated into medical imaging devices such as endoscopes, as well as in virtual reality glasses, wearable electronics, and other computer vision devices.

Mapping the design space of photonic topological states via deep learning

Using deep learning for enhanced design of photonic topological states, a team of MIT engineers including Dr. Brian Anthony, Robin Singh, and Anu Agarwal has developed a framework that could enable better design of optical filters, reflectors, and other chip-scale photonic components.
